White House Memoir
Paul Jennings, Madison’s slave, wrote The White House Memoir, also known as A Colored Man’s Reminiscences of James Madison. This was the first ever White House Memoir. Jennings had been Madison’s slave since the age of ten, but after Madison’s death he was purchased by Dolley Madison in 1845. Jenning’s worked for Dolley to earn his freedom, and in 1865 he published his White House Memoir. Surprisingly he had the highest respect for Madison, he said that he would never harm a slave he would simply talk to them if they misbehaved he would simply talk about the problem with them.
