James Madison was born in Virginia on March 16, 1751. Madison's home is located four miles south of Orange, Virginia. The estate covers 2,700 acres. Madison's home was served by over 100 slaves. The name became Montpelier from Madison himself. He liked the word which was from french spelling which meant Mount of the Pilgrim.
James Madison was the oldest of twelve children. He was born on March 16, 1751. Three of Madison’s brothers died as babies. In 1775 two more of his siblings died Elizabeth and Reuben from contaminated water. Madison was the son of Nelly Conway Madison and James Madison Sr. His father died at the age of 50 and his mom died around the age of 98.
